Devin Toner was left out of the 31-man group for the Rugby World Cup of Ireland in Japan.

“I have coached Dev for 10 years, he is not merely our line-out champion but he’s such a fantastic player, and he is an absolutely quality individual. This was a remarkably hard talk yesterday,” explained Schmidt.
“Jean Kleyn – we all probably don’t have a specialist tight-head second row because such and I believe we’re searching for that equilibrium. Tadhg Beirne gives us that versatility and he is teamed up at Munster this season.
“He offers you the threat within the ball such as a 6 or 7 would and may play at the back row. We have James Ryan who’s created an opinion.
“Iain Henderson has promised so much and performed amazingly well for us sometimes. We’re going to want one to put his best foot forward so it was a really tight conclusion around Dev also.”
Connacht scrum-half Kieran Marmion has been left with Schmidt although Chris Farrell also gets the nod as a flexible back ahead of Addison, heading since Conor Murray’s back-up with Luke McGrath.
“It was a tricky thing right from the start to get the 45 we had,” added Schmidt.
“We went down to 40 players and also to go from 40 down to 31 was very hard, but we had a procedure whereby we return through every coaching, looked through those games.
“There were several men who clearly had more experience and likely had more credit from the bank and were far established.
“And there were other guys who were attempting to force their way to the group and trying to acquire a balance of present form versus previous operation. It is obviously a really very tough conundrum to attempt and fix.”
Striker Liam Boyce along with winger Jordan Jones both suffer harms and could overlook Northern Ireland’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Germany.
